Water Damaged iPhone? Emergency Repair Steps & Professional Service

What to Do If You Drop Your iPhone in Water

Dropping your iPhone in water is one of the most stressful tech moments you can experience. Whether it fell in the pool, the toilet, a puddle, or had a drink spilled on it, your immediate actions in the first few minutes determine whether your iPhone survives. Here's exactly what to do – and what NOT to do.

Immediate Emergency Steps

  1. Remove it from water immediately – Every second your iPhone is submerged, water is seeping deeper into the internal components. Grab it out as fast as possible.
  2. Power it OFF immediately – This is critical. If your iPhone is still on, hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off. Do NOT try to use your phone, check if it still works, or plug it in to charge. Electricity + water = short circuits that destroy components.
  3. Remove the case and SIM card – Take off your case to let trapped water escape. Use the SIM ejector tool (or a paperclip) to remove the SIM card tray. This opens a small vent that helps water drain out.
  4. Gently shake out excess water – Hold your iPhone with the charging port facing down and gently tap it against your palm to help water drain from the ports and speaker grilles.
  5. Pat dry with a lint-free cloth – Wipe down the exterior. Avoid pushing water into openings.
  6. Do NOT use rice – This is a persistent myth. Rice does not effectively absorb moisture from inside your device. Worse, rice dust and starch particles can get into your ports and cause additional damage. Studies have shown rice is no more effective than simply leaving your phone in open air.
  7. Do NOT use a hair dryer or oven – Excessive heat can damage the battery, warp adhesives, and crack internal components.
  8. Bring it to Tech Medics as soon as possible – Professional treatment is the best chance for full recovery.

Why Time Is Critical

Water damage to electronics follows a predictable timeline:

  • 0-2 hours: Water is present but corrosion hasn't started. This is the golden window for professional cleaning. Success rates are highest.
  • 2-24 hours: Minerals in the water begin depositing on circuit board traces and components. Corrosion starts forming on exposed metal contacts.
  • 24-72 hours: Significant corrosion develops. Components may start failing as corroded connections break down.
  • 72+ hours: Extensive corrosion. Much harder to clean successfully. Components may be permanently damaged.

The message is clear: the sooner you get professional help, the better your chances.

Professional Water Damage Repair at Tech Medics

At Tech Medics Macon, we use professional ultrasonic cleaning equipment – the same technology used in medical and industrial applications – to thoroughly clean your iPhone's internal components. Here's our process:

  1. Complete disassembly: We carefully open your iPhone and remove all internal components – logic board, battery, cameras, speakers, and connectors.
  2. Ultrasonic cleaning: Components are placed in an ultrasonic cleaning bath that uses high-frequency sound waves to dislodge water, minerals, and corrosion from even the tiniest crevices on the circuit board. This is far more thorough than any DIY method.
  3. Inspection under magnification: We examine the logic board under magnification to identify any components damaged by corrosion or short circuits.
  4. Component repair or replacement: Corroded connectors are cleaned or replaced. Damaged chips may need micro-soldering repair. We replace any parts that can't be saved – battery, screen, charging port, etc.
  5. Thorough testing: Before returning your iPhone, we test every function: display, touch, Face ID, cameras, speakers, microphone, charging, cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

But My iPhone Is "Water Resistant" – Why Did It Get Damaged?

Modern iPhones (iPhone 7 and newer) have water resistance ratings (IP67 or IP68), but this doesn't mean they're waterproof. Water resistance degrades over time due to drops, temperature changes, and normal wear. The rubber seals that keep water out weaken with age. Apple's warranty explicitly does not cover water damage, even on "water resistant" models.

Can You Recover My Data?

Even if your iPhone can't be fully repaired, we can often recover your photos, contacts, and data from water-damaged devices. Data recovery is one of our specialties, and we've saved irreplaceable photos and memories from severely damaged iPhones.

How Much Does Water Damage Repair Cost?

Water damage repair starts with a $49 diagnostic and cleaning fee (applied toward your repair if you proceed). Total cost depends on what components need replacing:

  • Cleaning only (minor exposure): $49-$99
  • Cleaning + battery replacement: $99-$149
  • Cleaning + screen + battery: $149-$299
  • Extensive repair with logic board work: $199-$399
